Hendreson County Board of Education Meeting
The Henderson County Board of Education will meet in regular session on Monday, March 15, 2010 at 6:00 p.m. at the Board of Education office.

HCHS Agriculture Education program in Top 10

The Henderson County High School Agricultural Education program was notified today it is in the Top 10 of all Ag Ed programs statewide in the percentage of students passing the three (3) Agricultural Education Kentucky Skill Standards (KOSSA) Assessments among schools where 30-49 total agriculture students were assessed during the 2008-9 school year. Henderson County had 59% (26 or 44) pass the assessment.For more information, please contact Clay Wells at 831-8800. 

HCHS Chorus Honored

We want to congratulate our Distinguished and Proficient District Vocalists. These HCHS students performed a prepared vocal Art Song before a trained vocal adjudicator in Madisonville, Ky. on March 6 and received a Proficient rating and medal:

HCHS Bands Honored

Congratulations to the 200 students of the HCHS Band Program yesterday for their great performances at Concert Festival.  All three bands earned a rating of Distinguished.  Henderson County is the only high school west of I-65 with three concert bands.  Particular accolades went to the Wind Ensemble for the highest overall ratings of all 45 groups at the event.

HCHS Track meeting

For those interested in running track at the high school this spring, there will be a meeting at 5:30 p.m. Monday, March 15 in the HCHS Preston Media center for all athletes and their parents.

There will also be a USATF Officials clinic Tuesday, March 16 at 5:30 p.m. in the Preston Media center.


Henderson County Schools Kindergarten Registration

Kindergarten registration will be held at all Henderson County elementary schools from March 15-26.  Children who are 5 before October 1, 2010 should be enrolled.
Location:  All elementary schools
Hours: 7:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m.

If possible parents should bring: 

  • child’s official birth certificate

  • social security card

  • current immunization records

  • Kindergarten physical form

Henderson County Gifted/Talented ENCORE drama students performing
4th and 5th grade ENCORE drama students from each Henderson County elementary school will be performing Farm Follies at the Henderson Fine Arts Center on Tuesday, March 16th at 6:30 p.m. Admission is free and all are invited to attend. The event is sponsored by the Henderson County Board of Education and Kentucky Farm Bureau.  


South Middle School Students in Nationally Recognized Chemistry Competition

Niagara Elementary wins at District Governor’s Cup Competition

Niagara Elementary won the District Governor’s Cup competition held at Cairo Elementary on February 27th.  Both team events of Future Problem Solving and Quick Recall brought back first place medals. 

Individual competition honors include:

  • Rebecca Robards - 1st in Language Arts and 2nd in Social Studies;

  • Erin O’Nan - 2nd in Language Arts and 5th in Composition;

  • Jackson McConnell - 3rd in Language Arts;

  • Keaghan Knight - 5th in Social Studies;

  • Shelby Pendergraft- 5th in Science and 5th Arts and Humanities;

  • Logan Dodson- 1st in Arts and Humanities;

  • Cara Daniels-1st in Composition. 

All of these students now move on to compete in the Regional Governor’s Cup Competition to be held at Bend Gate on March 16th and 20th.
 

SMS Spring into South for 5th grade students
South Middle School will host its Spring into South for 5th grade Students and parents on Thursday, March 25th from 5:00 p.m. to 6:30 p.m.  The event is an opportunity for incoming students to learn more about the middle school. 
Events include:
5:00-5:45—Pizza in the Cafeteria
5:45-6:30—Informational sessions on academics, electives, scheduling, after-school activities, Bulldog Boulevard, sports, parent involvement, and health, medication and 6th grade physicals.

HCHS Step Team Tryouts

Step Team tryouts will be conducted in the high school auditorium April 13-15 from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m.  Tryouts are for current 8th grade through 12th grade students. Students may wear knee length shorts or sweat pants, t-shirt and gym shoes. There is a mandatory parent participant meeting on Monday, April 12th in the high school auditorium at 5:00 p.m. Parents may enter through door number 20. HCHS Band Easter Ham Sale

The band Easter ham sale has begun!  The boneless hams are from Jim David Meats.  They are approx 8 – 9 lbs. each and cost $27.00 per ham.  Flavors include:  Peppered, Black Forest, Smoked, Brown Sugar and Hickory.  The expected date of delivery is March 25th.  Please contact Tonya Beals at 270-860-4604 or at tbeals-1@hotmail.com if interested in ordering a ham.  The last day to order is Friday, March 12th.


Miss Kentucky Visits Students at Cairo Elementary

Miss Kentucky, Mallory Ervin, visited students at Cairo Elementary Monday, March 8 to share her advice for success. She told the students that in order to be successful in life they needed to 1) Work hard in school 2) Be healthy and fit and 3) Discover what your individual gifts are and never give up until you reach your goal. She shared that she tried out three (3)  times for the Miss Kentucky title before she made it, even though she worked very hard to prepare each time. She was the 4th runner up in this year’s Miss America pageant.

 

South Middle Dance Team Wins

SMS dance team placed first in Hip Hop, first in Pom and  brought home the Grand Champion trophy in the Valentine Classic Cheer/Dance Competition in Madisonville, Kentucky on February 6, 2010 at Hopkins County Central High School.    

South Middle School Dance Team also placed first in Pom and first in Hip Hop at the America’s Best Championship Competition in Nashville, TN on February 13, 2010. With this win, the team became Division Champions and eared a bid for the U.S. Finals.  For more information, please contact Carrie Bolin at South Middle at  270-831-5050. 

 

North Middle School Open  House for Fifth Graders

North Middle School will host an Open House for fifth grade students who will be attending North Middle School for the 2010-2011 school year on Thursday, March 11 from 6:00 p.m. - 7:30 p.m.  There will be a tour of the building and an opportunity for families to meet the sixh grade faculty.  Refreshments will be served.

 

South Middle School Students Raise Money for Haiti Relief

Students at South Middle School  raised over $100 for the Red Cross to help the relief efforts in Haiti. The effort was coordinated by Kathy Givens, Youth Service Center Director at South Middle School.

Success Class students collected items to make kits to be given out in Haiti as well.  The kits contained a toothbrush, wash cloth, hand towel, bar soap, band aids, as well as other items.  Nancy Swanson coordinated the effort, and  Ms. Jamie Like collected and sent the items through a local Methodist Church to Haiti.

Cheer Tryouts for 2010-2011 Football and Basketball Season

Cheer tryouts for the 2010-2011 football and basketball season will be conducted on April 14th and 15th from 4:00 – 6:00 p.m., and April 16th from 4:00 – 8:00 p.m. in the main gym at HCHS.  A required parent/candidate meeting will be held April 13th at 6:30 in the HCHS auditorium.  Contact Debbie Pirtle at 831-8820 if there are any questions.

Preschool Early Registration

Early  registration for Preschool will be held March 15-26 from 8:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m. at the Board of Education Center for Support Services.  For more information, contact Stephanie Newman at 831-5010.

Family Literacy Day

The Henderson County Early Childhood Council/KIDS NOW will host a free family literacy day for all families with children ages birth to 5th grade.  This free event will be held Saturday, March 20, 2010 from 10:00 a.m. - 1:00 p.m. at the Henderson County Cooperative Extension Office on Zion Road.  There will be informational booths, hands-on activities, door prizes and a light snack.  Each family will receive a literacy packet with free books and tips on increasing literacy at home.  For more information please contact Annette Rigdon at 831-5144.

Fun Friday Sessions Cancelled

There will be NO Fun Friday on Friday, March 5, March 19, or March 26.  The only Fun Friday in March will be March 12.  To register, please contact Natalie Reynolds at 831-8720.

Update on Status of Students Involved in Bus Accident

The following information is an update on the status of the students involved in the Henderson County Schools bus accident yesterday morning. District personnel made contact with the families last evening and discovered that of the two remaining at the hospital at the time of the press conference, one remained overnight for observation and one student was transported by ambulance to Kosair Children’s Hospital at 4:00 p.m. As of this morning, the one student at Methodist Hospital is due to be released today and the other student, Meghan Felker, a 12th grader at Henderson County High School, is in stable condition with back injuries at Kosair’s.

AB Chandler National Honor Society (NHS) Raising Funds for Haiti Relief

AB Chandler National Honor Socitey is raising money for Haiti Relief by hosting a Valentine Queen and King contest.  Students vote by placing a penny in a jar for their favorite staff member.  One penny equals one vote.  The king and quees will be announced during assembly at 7:30 a.m. on Thursday, February 18, 2010 at AB Chandler Gymnasium.  NHS students will present a check to Erin Cox, a medical missionary working with the group Village to Village during the assembly.  Erin was in Haiti when the earthquake struck and will give a presentation about her experiences.  For more information, contact Brian Gardner at 270-831-5162.

Henderson County High School Student Selected as Candidate for the United States Presidential Scholars

Program The White House Commission on Presidential Scholars and the United States Department of Education announced the selection of Mae Mosley, aHenderson County High School senior, as a candidate for the United States Presidential Scholars Program.  The Presidential Scholars Program was established in 1964 by Executive Order of the President to recognize and honor some of our nation’s most distinguished graduating seniors.  In 1979, the program was expanded to recognize students who demonstrate exceptional scholarship and talent in the visual, creative, and performing arts.  Annually up to 141 students are chosen from among outstanding graduating seniors to become Presidential Scholars, one of the nation’s highest honors for high school students.  For more information on the Presidential Scholars Program, go to http://www2.ed.gov/programs/psp/about.html. Mae is the daughter of Fran and Clayton Mosley.  

 
HCHS Choir Members Honored
Three (3) HCHS Choir Members were selected for  the 2010 Kentucky Music Educator Association's All-State Senior High Choir.  Perry Enlow, Heather Lacy and Kaila Marshall will travel to Louisville, Kentucky on February 3-5 to rehearse with 600 other talented vocal students.  A choral concert will be held at Whitney Hall in the Fine Arts Center for the Kentucky Performing Arts on February 5.

Guns and Hoses Charity Basketball Game Rescheduled

HCHS Youth Services Center and JROTC has rescheduled the Guns and Hoses Charity Basketball Game for 7:00 p.m. on February 27, 2010 at the Henderson County High School Gymnasium.   The Henderson City Police Department will play the Henderson City Fire Department for a great cause!  Tickets will be $5.00 and can be purchased at the Henderson County High School Bookstore or from any firefighter or police officer.   Tickets will also be sold at the door! For more information please contact Shawna Evans   270-831-8867  270-831-8867 or shawna.evans@henderson.kyschools.us.
