Health Science Instructors

Mrs. Lori Fulkerson R.N. is one of the Health Science teachers at HCHS. Mrs. Fulkerson has 11 years of experience working in the nursing field. Mrs. Fulkerson earned her Associates Degree in Nursing from Henderson Community College in 1999.

 

Mrs. Amy Legate is another one of the Health Science teachers at HCHS. Mrs. Legate has over 9 years of experience in medical billing/coding. Mrs. Legate earned her Medical Office Certificate from Indiana Business College in 1995.

 

 

 

 

 

 

Health Sciences

Henderson County High School’s Health Science Department offers students a wide variety of knowledge, and hands-on skills to help educate them for their future healthcare career choice. Not only does this education prepare the student for college, but it also prepares them for some entry level jobs. The health science department is made up of five teachers. Four of the teachers are registered nurses and one is certified in medical coding/billing. Therefore, the approximate 600 students that are enrolled in the health science program are being challenged by educators that have first- hand experience in various healthcare settings. The teachers are; Mrs. Amanda Lacer, Mrs. Ashley Bailey, Mrs. Tracey Long, Mrs. Lori Fulkerson, and Mrs. Amy Legate. You can read about the teachers below and find out below is a list of just a few of the many things that Henderson County’s Health Science Program has to offer:

 


Skills that Students Learn:


Medicaid Nurse Aid Skills: (Blood Pressure, Pulse, Respirations, Temperature, Occupied and Unoccupied Bedmaking, Measure Intake and Output, Transfers, Denture Care, Bed Bath, and many more…)

Medical Terminology: (Basic medical terminology is taught so that the student will be able to communicate and understand with other health care professionals as well as read patient charts.)

Medical Math: (I.V. Calculations, P.O. Drug Calculations, Drug Reconstitutions, etc.)

Introductory Skills in the following specialty areas: Dentistry, sport medicine, pharmacology, veterinary, optometry, pathology, cardiology, alternative medicine, radiology, and medical clinical laboratory.

Medical Office Skills: (Billing, Coding, Registration, Receptionist are just a few.)




Certifications that can be Obtained:

Medicaid Nurse Aide Certification: ***This course must be taken in order to be accepted into KCTCS Nursing Programs***

CPR and First Aid Certification: BLS for the Professional Rescuer




College Credit:

Throughout the student’s Health Science career there is opportunity to earn dual college credit. If a student qualifies for and takes advantage of all dual credit opportunities, they can potentially earn up to sixteen college credits before graduating high school.



Clinicals/Co-op:

The senior students have many work based learning opportunities in various medical facilities in the tri-state area. They use skills that they have learned in the classroom, as well as, learn new things in the clinical setting. Some students even have the opportunity to earn money while working during school hours.



HOSA:

HOSA, or Health Occupations Students of America, is the student organization that health science students can join. HOSA does a wide range of community service projects that support different healthcare diseases that affect many Americans. In addition, HOSA helps the less fortunate individuals and families in our tri-state area. Some of the activities that HOSA participates in include: raising money for the American Heart Association, Leukemia & Lymphoma, and Cancer Society; work and supply food for the Salvation Army ‘s soup kitchen and collect canned foods; collect coke tabs for the Ronald McDonald House, and adopt families at Christmas time

Health Science Instructors

Mrs. Amanda Lacer R.N. is one of the health science instructors at HCHS. Mrs. Lacer has over 10 years in the nursing field. She earned her Associates Degree in Nursing from Henderson Community College in 1999, and her B.S. in Industrial Education in 2008.  

 

Mrs. Ashley Bailey R.N. is one of the Health Science teachers at HCHS. Mrs. Bailey has over 8 years of experience in the nursing industry. Mrs. Bailey earned her Associates Degree in Nursing from Henderson Community College in 2003.

 

Mrs. Tracy Long R.N. is another one of the Health Science teachers at HCHS. Mrs. Long has over 7 years of diverse experience in the nursing field where she has worked in OB/GYN, Medical/Surgical, Outpatient Surgery, and Home Health.
