What is a council? The council is the governing body for this school. It determines school policy for curriculum, staffing, discipline, scheduling, instructional practices, extracurricular activities, and other matters pertinent to the operation of the school. The council meets once a month on a date and time that is suitable to all parties.
Who serves on the council? Normally, two parents, three teachers, and the principal. A third parent representative may be elected if minority representation is needed on the Council.
Who may run for the council? Any parent, stepparent, foster parent, or legal guardian of a student who will be attending the school during the entire term of office. A parent is ineligible if he or she is an employee or a relative of an employee of that school or the district central office or a local school board member or the spouse of a school board member.
What is the term of office? The term of office is determined by the by-laws of the individual council. See SBDM Policies and Procedures by Schools.
Who may vote in an election? Parents, stepparents, foster parents, and legal guardians of the students who will be attending the school conducting the elections during the upcoming school year.
