Academic progress is mandatory for ALL HCA students, but in particular, students who are not yet age 18. Under KRS 159.150, “any student who has attained the age of six (6) years, but has not reached his or her eighteenth birthday, who has been absent from school without valid excuse for three (3) or more days, is a truant.” Under Kentucky law, students must be in regular attendance, and the school is mandated to report students who are not in regular attendance. At HCA, completion of coursework is considered full-time attendance. The following outlines consequences for failure to complete coursework:
One Week Behind in OdysseyWare/Academic Work:
· Lesli Werner, Head Teacher, or HCA Staff will check OdysseyWare weekly to determine if an HCA student under the age of 18 years old is behind in the required academic work.
· Lesli Werner, Head Teacher, will contact the student and parent/guardian informing them of the issue.
· Documentation of the contact will be recorded in Infinite Campus by HCA staff.
Two Weeks Behind in OdysseyWare/Academic Work:
· A profile or documentation of the absence of 2 weeks’ work will be sent to Marilyn Schwallier, Student Services at Central Office.
· Mrs. Schwallier will send an attendance notification to the parent/guardian.
· The letter is signed by Steve Steiner, DPP, and documented in Infinite Campus by Mrs. Schwallier.
· The student will be contacted by Lesli Werner and placed on a mandatory attendance contract of no less than 3 hours a day or 12 hours a week until the required work is current.
· Documentation of the contact will be recorded in Infinite Campus by HCA staff.
A Week of Mandatory Attendance – completed work not up to date:
· Steve Steiner and/or Rhonda Gillham, Court Liason, will make a home visit/parental contact.
· Documentation of the contact is recorded by Student Services staff.
One/Two Weeks of Mandatory Attendance – completed work not up to date (after Student Service Contact):
· A petition will be filed with the CDW office by Steve Steiner or Rhonda Gillham.
· Documentation of any petition filed will be recorded in Infinite Campus.
