Celebrate Success

Brennan Farley is going to sign as a preferred walk-on to play football at Eastern Kentucky University on April 29th at 3:45 p.m. in the cafeteria at Henderson County High School.  Your attendance is appreciated.

 

On March 16, 2014 thirty-two (32) Henderson County FFA (Future Farmers of America) members attended Murray State FFA Field Day to compete in various career development events. MSU FFA Field Day is a multi-state event with forty-seven FFA chapters participating from Kentucky, Illinois and Tennessee. Henderson County FFA placed 17th overall.

Results from the various career development events are:

On Tuesday, April 22, 2014, Henderson County High School rewarded students who have a 3.0 and above GPA, no disciplines and no unexcused absences for the 3rd quarter. Students will had an opportunity to hang out with friends in the cafeteria and enjoy popcorn and soft drinks. A total of 547 students qualify for this reward.

SkillsUSA members at Henderson County High School are celebrating success in recent state SkillsUSA leadership and skills competitions that were held on April 16 through April 19, 2014 at various locations in downtown Louisville, Kentucky.

Students from three different program areas at Henderson County High School, including automotive, information technology, and visual communications, competed in events displaying skills in trade and leadership areas. Overall, these students collected seven (7) gold medals and two (2) silver medals.

Gold medalists are:

Alex Owens (computer programming)

Dylan Townsend (advertising design)

Jesse Lykins, John Pritchett and Alex Owens (career pathways showcase)

Andrew Abell and Kevin Zamora (digital video production)

 

Silver medalists are:

Ryan Johnson (computer programming)

Robert Sauer (Internetworking)

 

As of now, Owens, Townsend, Lykins, Pritchett, Abell and Zamora will now advance on to the national level competitions set for June 23-27 in Kansas City, Missouri at the H. Roe Bartle Hall and Municipal Auditorium.   The SkillsUSA Championships is the showcase for the best career and technical students in the nation. Contests begin locally and continue through the state and national levels. This is a multi-million dollar event that occupies a space equivalent to 16 football fields. In 2013, there were more than 6,000 contestants in 98 separate events. Nearly 1,500 judges and contest organizers from labor and management make the national event possible. The philosophy of the Championships is to reward students for excellence, to involve industry in directly evaluating student performance and to keep training relevant to employers' needs. The students attending the conference would like to thank all the teachers and administrators who helped provide them with the chance to compete for their school and community.  Skills advisors are Jeff Givens, Zach Hamby, Scott Herschelman, Stuart Jones, Don Horvath, Ron Spencer, Kaleb Payton, Ginny Johnson and Madison Sewell.

Heroin ….. The next epidemic? You are invited to a Town Hall meeting!!!  The Henderson County Agency for Substance Abuse Policy Local Board, Henderson Police Department, Henderson County Sheriff’s Office, and Healthy Henderson a Homegrown Approach to Wellness  is hosting a Town Hall meeting on the ever-growing threat heroin abuse.  This is in response to the national spread of a drug that has been of little concern in our region for many years.  According to Lexington/Fayette County law enforcement, they had 50 fatalities due to heroin overdoses in 2013.  We all are aware of what has happened to Northern Kentucky as well. Is the drug trend for Henderson County Heroin?  Hear from law enforcement and community health professionals on what we all need to know!!!   This is to be a first of many town hall meetings to be held to help educate the community on drug/alcohol use and abuse Henderson County.  Come be a part on making our community better.  Everyone is welcome!   Location – Henderson County cooperative Extension Office, 3341 Zion Road Henderson, KY Time – 6:00 p.m. Date – Monday April 28th Speaker – Major Charles “Chip” Stauffer and a panel discussion will follow.  Light refreshments will be served. What is Happy Feet?  Henderson County Happy Feet is an organization that raises money to provide new shoes for those students of Henderson County that are in need.   “HAPPY FEET EQUALS LEARNING FEET”.  The Happy Feet organization raises money in a variety of ways.  Family Resource Youth Services Center receive a number of shoes they are allotted to give out.  Students are then referred through their school’s Family Resource Youth Services Center Coordinators to receive the shoes.  After a student is referred they go to one of our locally owned shoe stores (Wilkerson Shoes) to pick out a pair of shoes and are sized and make sure the shoe fits.   As a Youth Services Center Coordinator at Henderson County High School.  The 2nd Annual Shopper’s Fest is a way you can give back to your community and to the students.   All you need to do is come and shop for some of the things you normally would shop for.  Only this time proceeds will go to Happy Feet.  The Happy Feet organization has a wide variety of vendors that are willing to come help out this organization.   There will be JEWELRY, MONOGRAMMING, CRAFTS, PHOTOGRAPHY, HOME DÉCOR, PURSES, HEALTH & BEAUTY, FOOD, BASKETS, FLORAL DESIGNS, APPLIQUED CLOTHING, CERAMICS AND MUCH MORE! JOIN US AT NMS DURING THE ANNUAL TRI-FEST WEEKEND & CHECK OUT THE VARIOUS VENDOR TABLES! If you plan to become a Student Ambassador applicant during your junior year, you must pick up an application this week and follow the instructions. HCHS is offering summer learning opportunities for students who want to complete a required course/high school credit during the summer. Doing so would open the student’s schedule for more electives/specialized courses of study or assist students who have failed a course and need credit recovery. This opportunity is also available to incoming freshmen.  The summer session will begin on Tuesday, June 3rd and run through Friday, June 27th. Doors open at 7:30 a.m., and classes occur from 8:00 – 11:30 a.m. Classes available include: computer applications, physical education/health, arts & humanities. Credit recovery will be offered in conjunction with the 21st Century Learning Center grant in the core areas of English, math, science and social studies. There is no charge for credit recovery or computer applications classes. There is a $150 tuition fee for arts & humanities and physical education/health. If a student was enrolled in an RTI class that prevented him/her from taking physical education/health or computer applications during the 2013-14 school year, the course fee is waived. [RTI classes include Math Success, Read 180 and reading strategies.]  Students are expected to have perfect attendance.  Applications may be picked up in the guidance office at the middle schools for 8th grade students or at any of the unit desks at Henderson County High School. On April 28th, the Henderson County High School Band program will present its final concert for the 2013-2014 school year. The Spring Concert will take place at 7:00 p.m. at the Henderson Fine Arts Center. Admission is free to the public. The Symphonic Band will perform Samuel Hazo's "Ascend" along with the currently popular Pharrell Williams’ tune, "Happy." The Wind Ensemble will open with Adam Gorb's "Parade of the Wooden Warriors." The emotional "Theme from Schindler's List," by John Williams, will feature senior and All-State bassoonist Jesse Tapp as the violin soloist. The Wind Ensemble's program will continue by highlighting the trombone section, along with some of their teachers, on the Henry Fillmore classic, "Lassus Trombone," and will conclude with the Julie Giroux epic, "Khan." Though this is the final concert for the HCHS Bands, there are still several opportunities to hear the students perform before the year ends. Many of the band students will be playing in the pit orchestra or performing on stage in the spring musical, "How to Succeed in Business without Really Trying," on May 10 at 2:00 p.m. and 7:00 p.m. and May 11 at 2:00 p.m. The Wind Ensemble will perform at the annual Memorial Day service in Central Park on May 26, and all the students in the band program will perform together at the HCHS Graduation Ceremony at the Ford Center in Evansville on May 30.

For anyone interested in joining the Henderson County High School Marching Band's Color Guard, there will be a clinic for new members only on Thursday, May 1st in the high school band room from 5:45-8 PM. Auditions are Tuesday, May 6th and Thursday, May 8th, from 5:45-8 in the band room.

 

 

The annual Henderson County High School Future Farmers of America (FFA) greenhouse sale will begin on April 14, 2014 and continue through May 9, 2014. The sale will take place at the greenhouse unit located behind Henderson County High School. The plants were all grown and maintained by the high school students. FCCLA is collecting new and gently used books for the Family Literacy Day to be held on May 17 at HCC. Collection boxes are in the main lobby or see Mrs. Chancellor, Mrs. Johnson, Ms. Johnston, or Ms. Wagers to donate books.

All outstanding AP fees will be mailed home (blue paper) to parents/guardians of AP students. These fees are being collected in the bookstore by Ms. Lansden. Students will be allowed to take their AP tests even if the fees are not paid but they should know that these fees will be on their account and follow them until graduation.

Seniors -
Seniors – prom tickets are on sale.  They are $40 each.  You may purchase them in B104.

Seniors, you will need your immunization record for college entry.  To obtain a copy, please contact the nurse’s office.

This is a reminder that all fees and fines need to be paid as soon as possible. This includes cafeteria fees also. You will not receive your diploma at Graduation if you fail to do so.

 

Prom –

The 2014 Henderson County High School Prom is scheduled for Saturday, May 3, 2014 at Henderson County High School. Details are as follows:

Theme: “Gatsby” – The Roaring Twenties (selected by the senior class)

Photos: A professional photographer will be available to take professional photographs

Waltz: 6:30 p.m.

Time: 8:00 p.m. - 11:00 p.m.

Location: Prom and waltz are held in the high school's main gym

Tickets: 14th through April 25th - $40.00 each

After April 25th - $50 each.

Food: Soft drinks and hors d’oeuvres are included in the ticket price.

Henderson County High School’s Project Graduation is scheduled for May 30, 2014 from 11:00 p.m. – 4:00 a.m. at the high school. This is a community supported drug and alcohol free event for the current 2014 graduating class. Project Graduation coincides with the Henderson County High School graduation ceremony which will take place earlier in the evening.  The event is supported by donations from the community, fundraising efforts such as BINGO, as well as a donation of $3.00 per student from the Henderson County Board of Education. Activities for the event will include karaoke, a D.J., bungee run, sumo wrestling, casino night, and plenty of food, soft drinks, and lemon shake ups.  A multitude of prizes is given away at Project Graduation each year. Every senior who attends will leave with a prize valued at $10.00. Additionally, various seniors will win larger prizes such as iPads, Nooks, Kindles, refrigerators, flat screen TVs, cash prizes and one grand prize.  Project Graduation has been in place for over 25 years. This year’s co-chairs for the event are Henderson County High School’s College Coach, Rachel Heath, and North Middle School Language Arts teacher, Cathy Thrasher. Board members include Meredith Griggs and Heather Buley (coordinating food), Lynn Dawson (coordinating prizes), Cindy Williams (coordinating donations and publicity), Angela Comer (coordinating games) and Lawrence and Theresa Thomas (coordinating security).  “I am proud to be a small part of an extremely well run program that honors our students. The real recognition belongs to them and the community that steps up to donate in order for it to happen. Since the cost of the event is almost $20,000 it truly takes everyone to make it a success,” noted co-chair Cathy Thrasher.  Henderson County High School seniors interested in attending the event can purchase tickets at the high school bookstore for $3.00 in advance or $5.00 on the night of the event. Seniors may bring a guest who is at least 16 years of age and not over the age of 21. A guest ticket must be purchased in advanced at the bookstore for $5.00. In 2013 more than 85% of the graduating class attended.

ProRehab is offering Athletic Physicals to Henderson County Athletes on April 26th from 8:00 a.m. - Noon at Tri-State Orthopedic Surgeons in Evansville.  The cost is $15… But, ALL MONEY IS RETURNED to the SCHOOL. Please bring your KHSAA form with you.  You can pick up form at Student Services or click on link on HCHS Website. (In addition to the physical, athletes will receive the Functional Movement Screen and Y-Balance Test)
