Thelma B. Johnson Early Learning Center Awarded 21st Century Community Learning Center Grant

The 21st Century Community Learning Centers (21st CCLC) program provides academic, artistic, and cultural enrichment opportunities for children, particularly students who attend high–poverty and low-performing schools, to meet state and local standards in core academic subjects, such as reading, math and science.

This is the first time in the nation that a 21st Century grant has been awarded to a preschool center and is one of only four new 21st Century grants awarded in the state this year. The grant equals $675,000 over five years.

There will be three (3) ten-week/forty-day sessions offered during the school year, and a 20-day 80-hour summer program will be offered. Programs will be focused on literacy, math, and enrichment activities. The focus of this grant is to provide additional time and resources for struggling students and their families to help them achieve developmental milestones in academic, behavioral, social, emotional and physical development.
