During Safe Schools Week, we want to highlight the many ways our district works every day to create a safe, secure, and supportive learning environment.
Our commitment to school safety includes:
School Resource Officers: We are proud to have an SRO at every school.
Security Measures: Our schools utilize alert badges, weapons detection systems in our secondary schools, security cameras, and safety and security window films.
Secure Entrances: During the school day, exterior doors remain locked. Visitors must use the intercom system at the front entrance, show identification, and check in through our visitor management system before entering. The system checks the National Sex Offender Registry.
Emergency Preparedness: All schools regularly practice lockdown drills, and staff members receive training to help prepare for a variety of emergencies, including active school shooting training. We also have staff trained in Stop the Bleed, with kits available in every school building.
Community Partnerships: Our local fire departments provide fire safety programs at our elementary schools, helping students learn important safety skills. We also partner with the State School Security Marshal to do random safety checks in our schools.
STOP Tipline: Students, families, and staff can anonymously report concerns about threats of violence, bullying, drugs, self-harm, or other safety issues through the STOP Tipline, available on all HCS websites.
Safety & Security Committee: Our district works with school administrators and law enforcement representatives to review safety concerns, identify opportunities for improvement, and provide staff training, including active shooter preparedness.
Most importantly, we work diligently to build positive relationships with our students so they feel safe speaking with a trusted adult. Every concern is taken seriously, and we are committed to responding promptly and appropriately.
